When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."

Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. "Bring them here to me," he said.

And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied.

BADISMISHA's Reflection:

In this Gospel, there is a surgical lesson on how to handle pain. Jesus has just learned of the death of his cousin, John the Baptist: his heart is broken. What does he do? He withdraws to a deserted place.

He teaches us that when we carry deep suffering inside, we must have the clarity and strength to face it in silence, so as not to pour our darkness and malaise onto the people around us. Pain must be processed, not vomited onto others.

And yet, there is a very powerful detail here: despite his broken heart, as soon as he sees the crowd, Jesus feels compassion, heals their sick, and feeds them. He reminds us that, even in the moment of our greatest suffering, we must never close our eyes to the pain of our neighbor. Our pain does not justify being selfish. Helping others while we are hurting is the true miracle.

Finally, there is a third absolute truth. When we are in the "desert" of our lives, when it is late and we feel we have lost all power or hope, the Father intervenes. Faced with the impossible, God multiplies. If in moments of total difficulty you offer the little you have left, He does not abandon you. God acts exactly at the moment you think it's the end.
